Eva Longoria-produced, Forest Whitaker-narrated documentary to have Oscar qualifying run in 2014
Following its world premiere at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, Screen Media Films has acquired all North American rights to the powerful documentary FOOD CHAINS. In this exposé, narrated by Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker and featuring interviews with Eva Longoria (Exec Producer), Eric Schlosser (Exec Producer), Dolores Huerta, Barry Estabrook, Kerry Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an intrepid group of farm workers from southern Florida battles the $4 trillion global supermarket industry and reveals the rampant abuse of farm laborers in the United States. Suzanne Blech, President of Screen Media, plans to qualify the film for “Best Documentary Feature” in the 2014 Academy Award race with a traditional platform release in theaters later this year.
There is more interest in food in the United States today than at any time in our history. Yet, there is very little interest in the hands that pick our food – the hundreds of thousands of people to whom we are all connected through our purchases at grocery stores, farmers’ markets and restaurants. FOOD CHAINS explores critical human rights issues in American agriculture including wage theft, sexual violence and modern-day slavery and exposes the powers that perpetuate these un-American violations of human dignity. Narrated by Forest Whitaker and featuring dozens of farm workers as well as interviews with Eva Longoria (also an executive producer), Dolores Huerta, Eric Schlosser, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Barry Estabrook, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, this documentary is one of hope and promise for the triumph of morality over corporate greed –to ensure a dignified life for farm workers and a more humane, transparent food chain. FOOD CHAINS also expands on the legacy of Cesar Chavez by showcasing the contemporary battles still being waged in the fields.
Suzanne Blech said about the announcement: “It is a great honor to work with Sanjay Rawal and the FOOD CHAINS team, who have dedicated their heart and soul to shed light on this horrible shame in the United States today. This film is a call-to-action to protect the unprotected and stop the injustice of modern day slavery.”
“I am thrilled beyond measure to partner with Screen Media on the distribution for FOOD CHAINS,” said Director Sanjay Rawal. “The topic of farm labor is obviously dear to me and I’m grateful how committed Screen Media is to the issue and to the film. I am very excited about moving forward and am looking forward to the road ahead of us.”
The deal was negotiated by Suzanne Blechand Seth Needle, Director of Acquisitions & Marketing, at Screen Media Films, and Ryan Kampe of Visit Filmson behalf of the filmmakers.
